A lot of different entities have rules about traveling with a pet. It’s important to do a lot of research, because the rules for the airline might be different than your arrival country. Here’s what you need to fine out.

The Country’s Rules

Find out what it takes to get your dog into your new country. Is there particular paperwork they will need? Will your dog be subject to a quarantine? An excellent source of this type of information is the website of the Embassy of your destination country in Washington, D. C. Also, it is helpful to explore expat message boards and forums for information about what others have experience moving their pets abroad to your specific country.

The City/Town’s Rules

An often-forgotten aspect of moving a pet abroad is the local registration. Research ahead of time what the steps are to register your dog in your new home and how long you will have to get it done. There is a small chance that your local municipality may want additional paperwork of information about your dog. It’s better to know before you arrive what those requirements are.

The Airline’s Rules

You often read on expat forums that airport officials in arrival countries don’t even ask to see the pet’s paperwork. But, I’ll tell you who does care that everything is in order: the airline. Just because Italy or Germany or Japan will let your dog into the country, doesn’t mean the airline is going to let your pet fly.
